  • Nissan 370z: Perhaps the best kept secret

By JimmyTheGlove on Thursday, May 25, 2017

After owning a bunch of sports cars (including a 1990 Nissan 300ZX) until I was a parent, the time finally came to decide upon another sedan in the 20,000+ price range. On a whim, I decided to inquire about used Nissan 370z cars and found an unbelievable deal in early January in another state!! The price was too good to be true, however this was one of those times when opportunity and great timing intersected. I drove the car for 2 hours where it was located (Chicago), bought it and drove it back home to Maryland - what a GREAT DRIVE!! This car has an unusual number of refinements for a sports car, and can be used comfortably as an ever day commuters car as well as a fun performance car to enjoy the 2 lane back roads with. The engine is smooth and has GOBS of power, and the breaks stop the car almost instantly. It took me awhile to get used to shifting the gears, there was a bit of a learning curve for me getting into second gear smoothly. Now the engine just purrs as you go from first to 6th. The ride, while Firm, is less punishing than you would expect from a car with such good performance. The noise level is moderate at high speeds, however that is likely from my tire choice. About the only fault I can find with this car is that you need to get good using the side and rear view mirrors because seeing out of the side pillars is quite limited unless the passengers seat is scooted way forward. There are very few things that will bring a wide smile to your face as quickly as driving this car on a twisty two lane back road. As an interesting comparison, I drove two exotic cars back to back at a friends house then hopped back in my 370z. The cars were a Ferrari, and a Porsche 911. Of course the Ferrari had significantly more power (and noise) and the Porsche was smoother and a much faster car....however I was not disappointed returning to the 370z realizing the cars market value was about 10% of the other two cars driven. Try it...youll LIKE It!!
  • Great Car for over 10 years

I was skeptical when I bought this car over 10 years ago. Has been a fantastic vehicle with over 135K miles. One issue at about 15K miles that the dealer fixed (leaking rack and pinion replaced) under warranty. Since then not a single issue with the vehicle. It is a performance sports car and lives up to that reputation in driving. I use this vehicle as a daily driver commuting mostly to work. It delivers on all levels. Surprisingly comfortable for a sports car. Never looked back on my skeptical side with this car. Exceptional value.
  • Last of a true driver's car

Two-door, front engine, rear wheel drive, 350 HP, six speed manual, Bose sound system, and you. This a driver's car, pure and simple. You feel the car, you feel the road, and you need to be paying attention when driving it. It is NOT a drag car. Stop light to stop light, buy something else, or you'll be disappointed. It IS a track car. If you enjoy taking hairpin turns marked at 15 MPH easily at 50, then this is your car. Hands down, it has no equal, at any price. The Z's suspension is world class. That, and exclusivity. Everywhere I turn, Camaro, Charger, Challenger, STi, and of course Mustangs. All good/great cars no doubt, but I want something different, something make them sweat a little. Nothing does that quite like a NISMO Z. Maybe the new BMW, er... Supra. You-tube videos say "it's outdated". No, it remains true to it's heritage. It maintains the essentials that made it great. The Z is 50 years old... I personally appreciate it not changing. Buy a new BMW, and it three years, it looks 10 years old because they are constantly changing them. You can buy more HP sure, but can you really use it without winding up with a 1k ticket or jail? 350-400 is about the max you can really hammer on the streets and get away with it. Mine dynos at 405. More than enough. I am very pleased with my purchase. If you decide to get one, order it from Nissan Japan, not buy one off a US lot. The "real" NISMOs are built in Japan. A lot of the ones running around were base cars off the boat, and US converted. BIG difference. US models have standard HP, suspension and painted with Sherman-Williams car paint. REAL NISMOs have carbon fiber suspension, drive shafts, and some Japanese name brand pearl white paint. They also have more base HP. So essentially weigh less with more HP. If you are unsure (buying used) take it to the local Nissan dealership and they will clear it up quickly.
